If you want something super-concentrated, you can sip the Caleo Dark & Spicy over ice. It reminded us of chamomile tea or yerba mate, with a very light fizz. And, true to its name, it made us feel alivea rare and welcome sensation these days. The flavor reminded us of a minty tea, with notes of lemongrass and a sour aftertaste. The orange flavors are subtle and sweet compared with those of the more sour, bold citrus-flavored drinks we tried. You might cut an alcoholic drink with an NA mixer to lower the alcohol by volume, negating some of the alcohols effects, or you might alternate drinks throughout an evening to lower your intake. Experts recommend their top picks for books, bottles, and barware for the cocktail lover in your life (with ideas for teetotalers, too). Tasting notes: Contrary to what the name would have you believe, the Hella Bitters & Soda Bittersweet Spritz has a lot more going on than a bitters and soda. The bottles chic, minimalist design makes Pentire Adrift feel especially fancy, like something youd display on a bar cart. But its acidity adds some depth of flavorwe were pleasantly surprised by the long finish from such a subtle drink. The fruity flavors left an aftertaste similar to that of diet soda, and a licorice flavor intensified the effect. We cant remember where we first heard the term bits n bubs to describe a drink of soda water with a dash of bitters, but its been a go-to at bars and at home ever since. How wed drink it: This piquant, coffee-flavored spirit is meant to be sipped neat. For each beverage, we considered the overall taste, aroma, texture, and flavor complexity, as well as whether the drink changed over time and whether the flavors on the ingredients list shone through. Serving suggestion: Serve over ice with an orange rind. We can all linger over our drinks now and mine can open up with time. Some NA beverages are sugary and fizzy like soda. But Wildreds holds its ownits less syrupy and bitter than Campari, and it packs a tangier bite. Curious Elixir No. Kin High Rhode: Though Kins packaging is sleek, the contents dont deliver. But if you fancy yourself a mixologist, dont worrymany companies offer their own recipes for mixed drinks made with their spirits. Wirecutter is the product recommendation service from The New York Times. But we mainly tasted lemongrass and sweet citrus, with some background notes of grass and lime. The cucumber flavors tasted cooked instead of fresh, though, which gave the drink an unpleasant funk. Thats not a bad thing, but the lighter flavors disappeared in mixers. It reminds us of tepache, a Mexican fermented pineapple brew; the company compares it to a pineapple margarita. Tasting notes: Vibey, floral, and aromatic, the De Soi Purple Lune is densely layered with surprising flavors. Since every person reacts differently, we notedbut didnt test extensively forhow the beverages made us feel. Its rich, luscious flavor reminded us of a tannic hibiscus tea, with hints of black pepper. Curious Elixir No. It stands up well on its own over ice. Tasting notes: Of all the Casamara Club sodas, the Alta was our favorite, thanks to its blend of zingy citrus, savory juniper, and heady allspice. Diluting with tonic or seltzer helps to mellow out the strong flavors. Casmara Club Sera: The Sera has a more warming flavor profile. Weve tasted 69 of these balanced, complex drinks since 2021including 35 new bottles and cans in 2022to find the most unique, mature, and delicious ones for sipping and savoring. But then it just tasted like extra-spicy ginger ale. Theres nothing wrong with that, but you may find yourself chugging through those more quickly. This drink is intriguingly light; the citrus tastes more bitter than sweet, like zest versus juice. This helps people to pause while drinking; it also stimulates appetite and digestion. Some may appreciate its smokiness, but we found it tasted more musty than aromatic. Kin Dream Light: Although Dream Light comes close to resembling an earthy chai concentrate in color, aroma, and taste, the sour and saccharine flavors overpower the warming spices in this drink. Proteaus tall, gorgeous bottles stand out and lend the drink an air of sophistication and intrigue (please transport me to whatever lush, enchanted forest is depicted on these labels). Among the drinks we tried, they seemed closest to a bottled version of bitters and soda. You dont need any mixers, and its a perfect amount for sharing. Although we appreciate that large-format bottled NA drinks are versatile and shareable, theres a time and a place for a single-serving drink. Plus, several nonalcoholic cocktail books can help you with more-advanced preparations. The trick is to create that nuance without using alcohol as a base. Ingredients: water, sugar, fermented and distilled hemp, wormwood, angelica root, ginger, sage, saffron, orange peel, Douglas fir extract, natural flavors, glycerol, citric acid, caramel color, tri-sodium citrate, lactic acid. Hella Bitters & Soda Grapefruit: This one-note drink feels more like a flavored seltzer than other options we tried because it mainly just tastes like grapefruit. It sips like an intensely flavored rose tea or a more-floral Lillet Ros, without the burn. But those flavors overpower the more-nuanced ingredients, resulting in a drink that feels simpler than other aperitifs we tried. We appreciate that the ginger tastes fresh compared with many other drinks we tried. And we have truly never tasted anything like this coffee-based drink, which you can enjoy sans mixer. Ingredients: carbonated filtered water; organic pineapple, lime, and orange juice concentrates; organic extracts of ginger, jalapeo, ancho, chili, damiana, rosemary, star anise; smoked sea salt, herbs and spices. Ingredients: organic Vermont maple syrup, organic bourbon-barrel-aged fermented maple, gourmet coffee, natural essences. Some of the maple comes through at the end of a pull, like the welcome relief of a Brachs caramel candy melting on your tongue. The ruby-red liquid glows through a cone-shaped glass bottle thats unique among drinks weve seen, and akin to that of an Italian bitter soda. Bubbles from added tonic ratcheted up the tingling sensation. Still, be sure to check the bottle. You shouldnt feel limited to what we include in this guide (but if you are sober, check to make sure drinks are truly zero proof). The tall, stunning bottle, which has a real cork, is a bit hard to fit in a fridge, but hopefully it will last a long time. 3: The pale, slightly effervescent No. The earthy and molasses flavors also weighed it down. Bax Botanics Lemon Verbena: Like most of the clear spirits we tried, the Bax Lemon Verbena was very subtle. Bottom notes of herbal ginseng, earthy beet, and tart pomegranate round it out. These layers of flavor play off one another, blossoming as you sip or eat or lounge. De Soi Golden Hour: Musky and sultry, the Golden Hour has a dominant clove flavor with notes of green tea and lemon. With a creamy fizz, Curious Elixir No. We enjoyed this drink chilled, both with ice and withoutyou can just as easily enjoy it by simply popping the top. Tasting notes: In a sea of challenging drinks, this spicy-sweet aperitif (a drink that aims to stimulate your appetite) is one of the only nonalcoholic beverages we tried that is flat-out quaffable. Though this wasnt the most luxurious or complicated drink we tried, sometimes convenience and ease are what you need.
