Hi Wayne, you can use a ph neutral PVA glue for attaching linen to a canvas, only issue might be if there is oil on both sides getting a good bond, you could lightly sand the surface of the oil to give a tooth for the glue to grab to. Hi Amy, its a bit tricker on paper as it will have a tendency to absorb the paint more, but you could apply a couple of coats of acrylic gesso onto the paper and work onto of that, or if you are getting too much absorption into the paper use a non-absorbent oil primer (Michael harding makes a nice one) Hope this helps, Will. Because oil paints take a long time to dry, they give you the flexibility to tweak, alter, soften and blend, resulting in lovely muted, smokey subtle paintings. Pro Tip: Cotton canvas does not absorb the size as well as linen and will need a stiffer brush and more working into the surface. So youd need to get some odourless mineral spirits to cut through the oil paint if you want to have a lean layer. I am now quite careful about priming and where I buy canvas or boards now.
